Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare professional who has completed advanced education and clinical training in the management of breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding. IBCLCs are certified through a rigorous international examination and are required to maintain ongoing professional development to ensure up-to-date, evidence-based care.
We provide comprehensive support that includes clinical assessment, practical guidance, and individualized strategies to help families meet their feeding goals. In addition to technical expertise, IBCLCs offer compassionate, nonjudgmental emotional support—recognizing that each feeding journey is unique and influenced by a family’s circumstances, preferences, and values.
What happens during an in-home visit?
I bring all the necessary equipment and expertise directly to your home—so you and your baby can remain in the comfort of your own space.
During your consultation, I will:
Complete a comprehensive feeding assessment to evaluate your baby’s latch, suck, and milk transfer.
Provide hands-on (or off!) guidance for positioning and latch techniques tailored to your unique needs.
Weigh your baby using a calibrated infant scale to assess growth and measure milk intake if appropriate.
Develop a personalized feeding care plan based on your goals, preferences, and your baby’s needs.
Answer all of your questions and provide evidence-based education and resources for ongoing support.
Do you offer prenatal visits?
Yes! Prenatal lactation consultations are designed to help you feel informed, confident, and supported before your baby arrives.
During our session, we will:
Review your feeding goals and discuss your preferences for breastfeeding, chestfeeding, or pumping.
Address any concerns or challenges you may anticipate, such as prior breastfeeding difficulties, medical conditions, or upcoming birth circumstances.
Discuss what to expect in the first hours and days after birth, including newborn feeding cues, establishing a good latch, and supporting milk production.
Create a personalized feeding plan tailored to your needs and circumstances.
Provide practical tips and evidence-based resources so you can begin your feeding journey with clarity and confidence.
How long does a visit take?
Prenatal consultations usually last about 2 hours, giving us plenty of time to discuss your hopes, answer questions, and help you feel fully prepared for your feeding journey.
Initial visits typically take around 90 minutes, where we’ll do a complete feeding assessment, explore what’s working, and create a personalized plan just for you and your baby.
Follow-up visits are about 60 minutes, offering a chance to check progress, adjust your plan, and support you through any new challenges.
Every family is unique, so I make sure to take the time you need to feel confident and supported.
Can you help with pumping, bottle feeding, or combination feeding?
Absolutely. I support all feeding choices—breast, chest, bottle, pumping, donor milk, supplementation with formula, or any combination. My role is to help you feed your baby in the way that works best for your family.
If you are using a breast pump, I can provide personalized instruction on pump operation, flange sizing, and settings to help you maximize comfort and efficiency, as well as guidance on milk storage, handling, and cleaning.
Do you take insurance?
I am not in-network with insurance, but I can provide you with a superbill to submit for possible reimbursement. Many families receive partial or full coverage depending on their plan.
Do you offer telehealth visits?
Yes, telehealth consultations are available and can be an excellent option for follow-up appointments, guidance with pumping techniques, or addressing specific latch concerns. Many insurance plans also provide reimbursement for virtual visits, making this a convenient and accessible way to receive support from the comfort of your home.
